UNC stays undefeated with Governor’s Cup win

By Jeffrey Hahne

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Saturday’s 10th Annual Governor’s Cup offered an unusual battle between states as the four-team competition featured North Carolina’s the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, along with Maryland’s Maryland University and Towson University.

N.C. State and UNC kept it close all day, but it was the Tar Heels who finally were able to find victory at the end in a close 193.225 – 193.025 battle.

Maryland finished third with 192.425. Towson was fourth with 191.85.

With the win, UNC has now won four of the last five Governor’s Cup meets, giving the state their fourth straight Cup win, as well.

The two North Carolina schools combined for 386.25, while Maryland’s schools scored 384.275. The win for North Carolina ties the series at 5-5.

The Tar Heels now stand at 11-0 and are the only undefeated team in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.

UNC was led by solid performances from Olivia Trusty and Christine Robella who finished in the top two spots (respectively) for the all-around. The all-around win is Trusty’s second of the season.

Trusty scored a season-high 9.90 on the bars, tied for second on floor and finished third on vault.

Maryland’s Rachel Martinez wound up third in the all-around.

Once again, North Carolina was dominant in the floor exercise (their final apparatus), leading the way with four of the top six spots.

North Carolina State’s Rachel Katz led the way on the vault with a 9.875.

North Carolina won their opening event on vault, but had trouble on the beam as three gymnasts fell.

“We gave up two points in falls,” said North Carolina coach Derek Galvin. “That’s a lot to give up. We were fortunate that (the other three teams) had a rough meet the same day we did.”

North Carolina’s high score on the beam this season is 49.275 – which was scored at their meet on Jan. 21 against William & Mary. Today, their beam score was just 46.925.

“We’ve got to be a little more consistent, if we want to be one of the teams at the NCAA Regionals,” Galvin said.

North Carolina’s next meet is on Feb. 19 against Rutgers and William & Mary. They’ll face N.C. State again on Feb. 27.
