Race to Regionals, 2005:  Week of March 16th

March 16th, 2005

Previous Week's Entry:  March 7th, 2005

Note: The rankings in this article are not always identical to those currently in Troester, as some teams do not always enter their scores in time to make the Troester rankings.  Regional Qualifying Scores and rankings in this article have been adjusted to reflect these scores.

Central Region

Seeded teams:
#1 LSU
#4 Alabama
#15 Central Michigan

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#22 Kentucky
#23 Auburn
#25 Kent State

Next in line:
#27 Michigan State
#34 Ohio State

It’s been a tough week in the Central Region, with Central Michigan, Kentucky and Kent State all failing to improve RQS this week.  #15 Central Michigan is still hanging on to its seeded spot, but #22 Kentucky and #25 Kent State have fallen out of the top 18.  This is bad news for Michigan State and Ohio State, two deserving teams that are in a tenuous position, depending on other teams to decide their fate.

Kentucky (current RQS of 194.765), Auburn (194.73) and Kent State (194.705) are very close to one another in RQS, and any of them would love to make a last-minute push into a seeded position.  This is a possibility for any of them, but Kentucky and Auburn have better chances than Kent State, thanks to their two remaining away meets compared to Kent State’s one home meet and one away meet.

Michigan State (194.555) is so close to the previously mentioned schools that the pressure is on all of them to maximize their RQS in the next two weeks.  Michigan State has one away meet, a home meet, and the conference meet left.  Similarly, Ohio State (194.16) will have to wait and see how things pan out for the teams ranked above them to determine how soon their season will end.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Kristina Menne, Centenary
Karley Walek, Ohio State
Cherisse Marier, Western Michigan
Kristin DiPietro, Bowling Green
Jessica Surridge, Ball State
(Next in line- Jolene Worley, Eastern Michigan)

North Central Region

Seeded teams:
#2 Utah
#10 Iowa State
#13 Brigham Young
#16 Utah State
#17 Denver

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:
#19 Minnesota
#24 Southern Utah (Monday’s score not in Troester in time for official rankings.)
#35 Iowa

Next in line:
#62 Air Force Academy
#75 Wisconsin- La Crosse

By virtue of a remarkable three meets garnering 195+ scores since last week’s rankings, Utah State has made a huge jump from #25 to #16.  This makes five North Central teams currently in seeded position and a sixth team (Minnesota) at #19.  That means that things are looking much better for Iowa, and even Air Force Academy must see a glimmer of hope that they will be able to grab the last spot to Regionals if Minnesota is able to move into the top 18.  Southern Utah, in seeded position two weeks ago, has now fallen to #24, but is only slightly more than a tenth behind Minnesota.

With four teams more or less on the bubble, it’s very hard to predict how many North Central teams will earn seeded spots to Regionals.  Three?  Four?  Five?  Six?  It will depend just as much on how other schools around #18 perform as on how the North Central teams perform.  Minnesota (one home; two away) and Southern Utah (two home; one away) each have three remaining meets, as opposed to the two most teams have, which could give them a little advantage in their home stretch push.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Jessa Liegl, Air Force
Lauren Robison, Air Force
Sashonna Iwaniec, Air Force
Ashley Koechel, Wisconsin-La Crosse
Alison Eagles, Wisconsin-Eau Claire
(Next in line- Rhian Paulson, Wisconsin- Stout)

Kelly Lewis, Air Force

Uneven Bars-

Nina Schubert, Wisconsin-La Crosse

Northeast Region

Seeded teams:
#7 Michigan
#11 Penn State

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:
#37 New Hampshire
#50 Pittsburgh
#54 Rutgers

Next in line:
#59 Pennsylvania
#61 Yale

There’s nothing new in the Northeast Region, which appears to be set.  Michigan and Penn State will earn seeded positions, while New Hampshire, Rutgers and Pittsburgh will earn unseeded spots.  Though #59 Pennsylvania (current RQS of 189.74) and #61 Yale (189.345) are only a few places behind #54 Rutgers (191.48) in the rankings, they are approximately two full points behind in RQS, which would be an incredibly large amount to overcome this late in the season.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Emily Petkun, Pennsylvania
Anne McPherson, Yale
Carrie Santore, Brockport
Emily Domenick, U. of Rhode Island
Sarah Wesley, Southern Connecticut
(Next in line- Amber Smith, Brown)

Vault-

Alexis Zafferes, Temple

Uneven Bars-

Kathryn Fong, Yale

Balance Beam-

Leah Moon, Pennsylvania

South Central Region

Seeded teams:
#3 Nebraska
#9 Oklahoma
#14 Arkansas

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#20 Arizona
#21 Missouri
#29 Arizona State

Next in line:
#32 Illinois
#36 Illinois-Chicago

The headline for this region would have to be the race between Missouri, Arizona State and Illinois for the last two of the three unseeded spots in the South Central Region, in which Missouri (current RQS of 194.79) surged ahead from #32 last week to this week’s #21 ranking, by virtue of their first away score over 194 (196.05).  Arizona State (194.41) and Illinois (194.295) are still neck and neck.  Both teams have 193 scores they’d like to drop.  Arizona State has one home and one away meet remaining; Illinois has two away meets remaining.

#20 Arizona (194.8; two away meets remaining) and #21 Missouri (one home meet; one away meet remaining) would like to move into seeded positions, and it is certainly possible for either of them.  Missouri, in particular, has some room to move up if they drop the 193.05 they are currently carrying, but will it be enough?

The Illinois-Chicago team (193.66) certainly hopes so!  This team is not in position to pass any of the South Central teams above it, so they will be watching the fates of Arizona and Missouri closely.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
Tara Boldt, Southeast Missouri
Lauren Newcomb, Illinois
Jennifer O’Neil, Illinois-Chicago
Jackie Jaworowicz, Illinois-Chicago
Kristina Campos, Northern Illinois
(Next in line- Alyson Cacciatore, Illinois-Chicago)

Vault-

Veronique Meunier, Illinois-Chicago

Uneven Bars-

Cara Pomeroy, Illinois

Balance Beam-

Kara Kapernekas, Illinois

Floor Exercise-

Rachel Goddard, Texas Woman’s

Southeast Region

Seeded teams:
#6 Florida
#8 Georgia

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#28 North Carolina State
#29 North Carolina
#31 West Virginia

Next in line:
#39 Maryland
#43 George Washington

Besides the Northeast Region, this is the other region that appears to be set.  Florida and Georgia are securely in seeded position, while North Carolina State, North Carolina and West Virginia will not be challenged for their un-seeded positions, nor will they challenge to move up into the top eighteen.

#39 Maryland (current RQS of 192.8) is approximately a point and a half behind West Virginia.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Rachel Martinez, Maryland
Christina Ghani, Towson
Erin Aiken, George Washington
Heather Kaufman, George Washington
Tricia Long, William and Mary
(Next in line- Natalie Moore, James Madison)

Vault-

Amy Stack, George Washington

Uneven Bars-

Brittany Gibbs, William and Mary

Balance Beam-

Alexandria Gatch, Maryland

West Region

Seeded teams:
#5 UCLA
#12 Oregon State
#18 Washington

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#26 Stanford
#33 Boise State
#41 San Jose State

Next in line:
#42 Sacramento State
#51 Seattle-Pacific

With Washington improving from #24 to #18, another spot has opened up in this region.  This means that in the close race between San Jose State (current RQS of 192.57) and Sacramento State (192.495), the heat has been turned on!  Both teams have one away meet and one home meet apiece remaining.  San Jose State seems to score higher on the road, while Sacramento State has had more luck at home.

Will Stanford (194.66) have a miraculous end to what has been a rough season for them and earn a seeded position?  Will Washington (194.875) be able to hang on to their seeded spot?  The San Jose State and Sacramento State coaches will no doubt have a stressful couple of weeks, closely monitoring the teams ranked above them in addition to doing everything they can to maximize their own teams’ RQS.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

My-Lan Dodd, California
Debra Huss, Seattle-Pacific
Brittany Hoffman, Cal State-Fullerton
Sarah Sullivan, Seattle-Pacific
Nirvana Zaher, Sacramento State
(next in line- Jessica Portlock, Alaska)

Vault-

Dominique Ingram, Alaska

Uneven Bars-

Alexis Tsurumoto, Sacramento State

Balance Beam-

Melissa Genovese, Sacramento State

Floor Exercise-

Stefanie Aeder, Sacramento State
