Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota (Web Site) has submitted a Bill (S. 1085-Olympic Sports Revitalization Act) to help Olympic Sports in need of support to avoid further cuts at the college level and in some cases, extinction. The Bill charges Congress with providing $10 Million per year (from 2002-2006) to the Olympic movement, targeting the sports that need the most assistance. The list of sports identified include:
Women's sports--gymnastics, fencing, field hockey, archery, team handball, synchronized swimming, equestrian, judo, and badminton
Men's sports--wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, rifle/shooting, fencing, outdoor track, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, water polo, judo, and archery
We need letters of support and phone calls in two stages. First, they need to be sent to the key individuals named below, expressing support for the Bill. Second, when the Bill is to be introduced to the House and Senate at a later date, writing to your congressional representatives will be critical.
This Bill could have lasting effects for our sport and the Olympic movement as a whole. Please take the time to contact these people now.
