Apr. 24, 2009 update

MIT to Cut Men's and Women's Gymnastics - Greg @ 4:12 am PST
MIT has officially announced the elimination of eight sports, including Men's and Women's Gymnastics. The administration is citing pending budget cuts and the strain of maintaining 41 sports. Other programs cut include men's and women's ice hockey, rifle, wrestling, golf, skiing and pistol. Stay tuned for additional information.

Apr. 22, 2009 update

2010-2011: Pipp to WMU - Greg @ 1:26 pm PST
Allison Pipp has committed to Western Michigan, for 2010-2011, according to a site submission. Pipp is a L10 who trains at Phenom in Illinois. She recently tied for 19th AA at the Region V L10 Regionals. She also placed 20th AA in 2008. Link: YouTube.com Channel

Starkell, Spring Promoted at Illinois - Greg @ 12:56 pm PST
Illinois' Bob Starkell has been promoted to the Director of Gymnastics at Illinois and will now also oversee the administrative portions of the Men's program. Justin Spring will be promoted to Assiciate Head Coach for the men, and Ivan Ivankov will be made an Assistant. The former Men's Head Coach, Yoshi Hayasaki, previously announced his intent to retire. 2010-2011; Ketner to Pitt - Greg @ 1:11 pm PST
Maya Ketner has committed to Pitt, according to a site submission. A L10 at the Geddart's Twistars, Ketner recently placed 1st AA, 1st(t) on VT, 1st on UB, and 2n on FX at the 2009 Region V L10 Regionals, Jr. D. She also tied for 26th AA and placed 6th on UB at the 2008 L10 Nationals, Jr. C.

2010-2011: Peszek to UCLA - Greg @ 11:04 am PST
Samantha Peszek has committed to UCLA, according to an interview posted at USA Gymnastics. The Olympic Silver Medalist is currently a junior. Link: USA Gymnastics Article

Texas Women's has announced the signing of Krystyn Mischeck, Brittany Montalbano, and Amelia Winczura to letters of intent. The commits of all three were covered in previous news items. Link: TWU Release

Oregon State Signs Jones - Greg @ 11:42 pm PST
Oregon State has announced the signing of Australian National Team member Melanie Jones. Jones was an alternate to the 2008 Australian Olympic Team. At the 2008 Australian Championships, she placed 9th AA and 2nd on VT. She will join the Beavers after the start of the school year, after the World Championships. Link: Oregon St Release

Women's: Illinois Staff Sweeps Coaching Honors - Greg @ 3:10 am PST
Illini Head Coach Bob Starkell was named NCAA Women's Head Coach of the Year. Assistants Kim Landrus and Amy Kruse were named co-Assistants of the Year, leading the Illini to a sweep of the coaching honors. Link: Illinois Release

Alexa Riech has committed to Denver, according to the NY USAG web site. Riech is a L10 at Hot Shots. In 2007, at the L10 Nationals, Jr. C Division, she placed 48th AA. Link: Official Web Page

2009-2010: Parsley to Ball State - Greg @ 2:00 am PST
Amber Parsley, a L10 with Universal, will compete for Ball State, according to her club's web site. Parsley recently finished 19th AA at the Region V L10 Regionals, Sr. D. She was also 27th AA at Regionals in 2008. Link: Universal Gymnastics

Kupets Wins Three Individual Events - Greg @ 12:30 am PST
Courtney Kupets of UGA completed her career in record fashion, picking up three individual event titles Saturday. Her nine event titles is the NCAA record, and her four titles in a Championships ties the feat matched by UK's Jenny Hansen and Utah's Missy Marlowe. Kupets won titles on the UB and BB, while tying LSU's Ashleigh Clare-Kearney for the FX title. Clare-Kearney also won the VT title, with Kupets tying for third. Link: NU Release

Stanford Wins Men's Title; Legendre Wins AA - Greg @ 10:18 pm PST
Stanford posted a 362.8 to win its first title since 1993. In a tight race for second, Michigan edged OU with a 361.5 to OU's 361.2, with Cal just behind at 361.15. Illinois was just in back of that pack in 5th with a 359.3, while Ohio State posted a 355.95.
OU's Steven Legendre won the AA with a 90.5, including a 16 on FX an a 16.3 on VT. Cal's Glen Ishino was 2nd with a 90.0, and Illinois' Paul Ruggeri was 3rd at 89.5. Link: UMinn Release

Courtney Kupets posted 10s on UB and VT to finish the night with a near perfect 39.9 AA.
