Can UGA Make it Five?

As Georgia Head Coach Suzanne Yoculan heads into her final campaign, she asked her senior class if she could be considered the "fifth senior" this season.  They enthusiastically responded, and now the "fifth senior" looks to lead her team to an unprecedented fifth title in a row.  Last year, UGA achieved their fourth consecutive title without the services of star all-arounder Courtney Kupets.  She's back once again, and will any other team have the firepower to unseat the GymDogs?

Utah will give it a try, and the Coaches' have dubbed Greg Marsden's squad the #2 team in the nation.  Despite the loss of all-everything star Ashley Postell, the Utes have enough talent left to give UGA a challenge next April in Lincoln.   #3 UF lost a load of talent from last season, with 9 routines gone.  But the Gators feature a strong frosh class and talented core of returners, led by Amanda Castillo and Corey Hartung.  And there are other contenders, like a resurgent UCLA program, that could disrupt the standings at the end of the year.

Getting to the NCAAs will be challenging enough, with the new format of 36 seeded teams combining with increasing parity to potentially shake up the lineup in Lincoln once again.  A few untimely injuries or illnesses, or simply an off day by the higher "ranked" team on BB could lead to some new faces in Lincoln.  Anything can happen, and that level of excitement is only good for the sport.

Location sometimes plays a factor in boosting the confidence of the host teams, and here are the 2009 Regional Host sites:

So without further ado, here is a brief look at some of the top teams, as determined by the Coaches' Preseason Poll.
