2012 Superlatives

Skills of Note in the 2012 Season (W)
The following is a listing of high level skills performed by Women in the 2012 Season. To make this list, the skill had to be successfully competed in a meet sometime during the season. The skill competed must have an FIG rating of "E" or "F" or "G", or an FIG Vault Difficult Value of 5.3 or higher. The issue of escalating difficult leading to higher injury rates and more wear and tear on the athlete is important. The purpose of this list is not to encourage or foster unreasonable risk or other threats to the safety of the athletes. In fact, many of the skills on this list were only competed in special circumstances. This list simply serves as an archive and collection of skills actually performed by the athletes. Michigan 195.825, Washington 194.15, SUU 191.9 at Nebraska 196.55

Frosh Jessie DeZiel won the AA and tied for the vault title to lead NU to the Master's Classic win. She tied on vault with teammate Janelle Giblin, who in turn tied for the bars title with teammate Lora Evenstad. NU's Emily Wong won the floor. For Michigan, Katie Zurales took the beam.

UCLA Wins IGI Chicago Style

Team Scores: UCLA 196.85, Boise State 196.025, Missouri 195.525, Illinois 195.1

Olivia Courtney led UCLA, winning the vault and tying for the bars title with Mizzou's Mary Burke. Burke won the AA with a 39.375. UCLA frosh Mattie Larson won the beam, while teammate Alyssa Pritchett won the floor.

Centenary 187.5, UW La Crosse 182.375, UW Eau Claire 178 at CMU 192.525

Brittany Petzold led the Chippewas to victory, winning UB and posting a 38.625 to win the AA. Teammate Kari Dieffenderfer won the VT while frosh teammates Kylie Fagan and Taylor Noonan tied for the BB title. Centenary's Meg Crowley won the FX title.

OU 195.875, BGSU 188.15, UW Oshkosh 174.725, at UK 194.325

Brie Olson lead the Sooners to the opening meet victory, winning the UB and tying for the title on VT and FX. She tied on VT with teammate Sara Stone and on FX with teammate Kayla Nowak. OU's Megan Ferguson won the BB. For UK, Audrey Harrison won the AA with a 38.375.

CollegeGymFans.com Top Recruiting Classes of 2011-2012

For the past several seasons, we've made an attempt to rank the incoming recruiting classes for teams from across the nation. Each year, the task seems to get tougher (and finalized later) and this year is no exception. In fact, the depth of this recruiting class has produced a variety of very deep and talented frosh classes. With another year of experience, the Sooners should be tough once again, proving the value of hard work and good coaching. The veterans will lead the way, with Brewer the early frosh standout in the released workout videos.

They'll need the newcomers to adjust quickly and become major contributors if the Cardinal are to return to Nationals

Frosh Davis and Persinger are both former elites and L10 standout Earls is coming back from injury. Health is a big variable in UGA's quest to return back to the Super Six. Keeping their stars healthy will be key to their success this season, as the talent is certainly there but many of the key players have missed significant competition time in the past with injuries. With just two incoming frosh and nine returnees, MIchigan will need to stay healthy and have step-up performances from veterans and newcomers alike. Four of six UB routines are gone, and this event will be the biggest challenge depth-wise, especially if injuries occur. These graduation losses explain why the Coaches' poll has them down several notches to start the season.

With the continued progress they've shown throughout the fall, they will also take a shot at an elusive berth in the Super Six. Gone is star AAer Samantha Engle, but Coach D-D Breaux welcomes a highly touted class of newcomers. In-state elite Courville is a standout in difficulty and execution, while elite transfer Ranzy and top L10 Hall bring power, amplitude and big skills. For the veterans, NCAA qualifier Dickson and Morrison are potential AAers, while Mathis excels on VT and FX. How quickly the frosh can make an impact will determine LSU's fate.

But in their place, the coaching staff has assembled what is perhaps the Bronco's strongest recruiting class of all time. How fast these four potential stars adjust to college competition could determine just how high Boise State finishes.

Several new stars from either the recruits or the underclassman will need to step up to replace the missing "end of lineup" routines from the departed stars. Replacing such leadership and "end of the lineup" scores can be very challenging. However, the return of 39+ AAer Akaogi and a strong frosh class, led by elite McCartin, should provide a boost. Last season, UW was leading Utah through three rotations before troubles on the beam hit the squad. Hitting confidently while getting step-up performances from the frosh will be keys for the Huskies this season.

By staying healthy and using the team's experience to its advantage, Auburn could be well set up by the time the end of the season arrives. AAers Toi Garcia and Kylie Shields both return, but any number of other veterans or newcomers could emerge in that role. Gone is star AAer Rebecca Best, but it was the sophomore class that matured quickly and lifted the Buckeyes last season. They are back, along with upperclassmen AAers Dean and Jones. Add in three frosh and a transfer, and the Buckeyes look set again to challenge for a spot at Nationals. They shine on BB and FX, with some strong tumbling. To finish even higher, they'll look to improve on the UB, which was their weakest event last season.

Once again, the core of the team will be built around AAers Pulgarin and Springer and NCAA Regional BB champ Hall. Castro is coming off a strong elite showing at Worlds and will provide a boost this season. Frosh Sakai-Hart is looking strongest in preseason among the newcomers. Injuries and depth will be an area of concern, especially among the stars.

These two stars were the core of the Kent State squad for several seasons, and the entire squad was fueled by the prospect of hosting Nationals. The returning 14 gymnasts, including seven starters, will be joined by a large class of talented frosh. Marie Case will lead the way, as the large squad looks to prove that last year's feat can be repeated. Leading the way are a pair of super sophs; Slechta was an NCAA qualifier while Russell was another rookie standout. Combined with Campbell, Ennis and Golich, the Gophers have some veterans that will be relied on heavily this season. Three frosh join the squad this year, and the Gophers will look to them to have the same impact as last year's class of newcomers.

The remaining routines will need to come from the underclassmen; the talent is there, but past injuries and the adjustment to college can be tricky. Newcomers (1): Caitlin Brown (Fr) Quick Assessment: The Cyclones return an experienced core set of gymnasts, a squad bolstered by solid upperclassmen leadership and a maturing sophomore class. AAers Michelle Browning and Michelle Shealy will lead the squad, along with Celine Paulus (if healthy). The Cyclones counted a fall at the Ann Arbor Regionals, or they would have been right in the mix with the other four teams that battled for the last spot at Nationals. ISU welcomes just one frosh, but she should make an impact immediately, particularly on BB.

Sr. Hansen will lead the way for the returnees, but a large class of L10s and Canadian elites could make an immediate impact. Look especially for Willis and Meyer to be early standouts, if they are healthy and can make the elite to college adjustment quickly.
