NCAA Session 2: Bama, OU and UCLA Advance

Written by

It all came down to the last rotation, but in the end, Alabama, OU and UCLA will advance to the Super Six.  As the final round approached, OU was in the "dugout" with a 197.2, highlighted by a 49.5 UB rotation.  In the final round, Bama was on vault, UCLA on UB, and Utah on beam.

Bama hit their vaults well enough to post a 49.35 and win the session.  They were led by Kim Jacob's 39.425 AA win.  UCLA survived a few scares on UB (low landing by Zamarripa, improvisation by De La Torre) to tie OU.  Utah had a shaky leadoff and then suffered two more falls to drop out of the running.

Early wobbles on beam took Michigan out of the running.  However, their two AAers, Joanna Sampson and Katie Zurales, posted the highest scores of the session.   Arkansas placed sixth, after some problems on UB and a slow start on vault.

Florida, led by frosh Bridget Sloan's leading 39.6 AA tally, powered to the top spot in Session 1.  After a shaky opening BB set, UF closed out the meet with a 49.475 on beam.  In fact, the Gator's top two scores of the day occured on bars and beam.

LSU came in second, paced by Rheagan Courville's 39.575 AA tally.  LSU closed out the meet with a 49.5 on vault and a 49.475 on bars, with a series of stuck landings on the final event.  They suffered a slow opening, posting a 49.0 on beam to start.

UGA came in a close third, after some wobbles on beam.  Their best event was their first, a big 49.5 to start on bars.  They closed out the meet with a 49.45 on vault, with Brandie Jay leading the way on her stuck Yurchenko Layout Full.

Minnesota was steady for fourth, hitting their floor sets for a 49.2.  A sub 49 effort on their weak event, UB, kept them off the pace of the leaders.  Illinois overcame a low bars tally to finish strong on FX, hitting 49.2 to finish fifth in the session.  Stanford tumbled to sixth after two falls on bars, and a what appeared to be an injury to Ivana Hong.
