Women's Regional Assignments Announced

Written by

The NCAA has set the Women's Regional Assignments for the 2011 Regionals.  The Regionals are based on seeding according to a certain pre-defined protocol.  The Top 18 are assigned in "trios" based on their rank, while the remaining 18 teams are assigned based on geographical proximity.  Host teams get preference in assignment to the Regionals.  For the list, see below.

Denver Regional – Denver
1.    Florida (1)
2.    Arkansas (12)
3.    Boise State (13)
4.    Denver (19)
5.    Arizona (20)
6.    Brigham Young (27)

Tuscaloosa Regional – Bama
1.    Alabama (2)
2.    PSU (11)
3.    Illinois (14)
4.    Auburn (22)
5.    CMU (25)
6.    Kentucky (30)

Corvallis Regional – Oregon State
1.    Oregon State (3)
2.    Nebraska (10)
3.    Iowa (15)
4.    SUU (31)
5.    San Jose St (34)
6.    MSU (36)

Ann Arbor Regional – Michigan
1.    Stanford (4)
2.    Michigan (9)
3.    Ohio St (16)
4.    Iowa St (21)
5.    Minnesota (23)
6.    Kent State (24)

Norman Regional – Oklahoma
1.    Oklahoma (5)
2.    Utah (7)
3.    Washington (17)
4.    UNH (32)
5.    Missouri (33)
6.    North Carolina (35)

Athens Regional – Georgia
1.    UCLA (6)
2.    Georgia (8)
3.    LSU (18)
4.    North Carolina St (26)
5.    Maryland (28)
6.    West Virginia (29)

The Top 18 are supposed to be seeded according to rank:  1-12-13, 2-11-14, 3-10-15, etc.  However, when there are two hosts in a trio of teams, the trio is split up, with preference going to the higher ranked team.  Thus, the NCAA swapped the Normal and Athens Regionals to split the two host teams.  Due to the unequal distribution of Top 36 teams across the regions, some teams, such as MSU and UNC, were assigned to Regionals relatively far from their home locations.

As determined by a draw, the #1 seed in each Regional will start on FX and end on BB, while the #2 seed will start on BB.  The upset minded #3 seeds will start on a bye before FX and end on BB.  The #4 seed will start on UB, the #5 on a bye before UB, and the #6 will get the favored Olympic order.

We'll have a complete breakdown of the Regionals at a later date.
