NCAA Week: Women's Team Preliminaries

The fields are set for the 2012 Women's NCAA Championships in Duluth, GA.  Located outside of Atlanta, the site will be filled with UGA devotees (and other fans, especially from the SEC), rooting for the 12 teams that will battle it out for the coveted spots in the Super Six Finals.  #1 Florida (and 7 others) will be looking to break into the exclusive club of four squads that have ever won an NCAA Team title:  Alabama, Georgia, UCLA and Utah.

The afternoon session starts Friday at Noon Eastern, and features #2 seed UCLA, #3 OU, #6 NU, #7 Utah, #10 Stanford and #11 LSU.

The evening session (6 pm ET) features #1 Florida, #4 seed Bama, #5 seed UGA, #8 Arkansas, #9 Oregon State and #12 Ohio State.

Stay tuned at the site for links and news throughout the weekend.

Afternoon Session I

This session could be among the most unpredictable of the meet.  After a Regional that saw all 12 seesd make it through without an upset (despite several close contests), we could see a shakeup in the order at the National meet.  The teams are all close enough that a counting fall could easily determine a team's fate.  #2 UCLA is the prohibitive favorite to advance from the session, and has shown some strong momentum and progress these last several weeks.  But, anything can happen in the NCAA prelims.  Both OU and NU have been tested by injuries, and the depth on both squads has been thrust into some pressure situations at Regionals and responded admirably.  They will look to hold off a deep Regional champion Utah squad, and fast-improving, talented but relatively inexperienced squads from Stanford and LSU.

Evening Session

The lively evening session features both #1 Florida and defending champ Bama, and the local favorite, the UGA GymDogs.  These three and the crowd supporting them will form a strong barrier to the teams trying to advance to the Super Six.  A healthy Arkansas squad could challenge, with the improving health of Katherine Grable the key to the Gym'Backs' success.  Oregon State and Ohio State fended off strong challenges to advance to the National meet, but will look to mistakes from the higher seeds.  This has happened in the past, with Florida having issues living up to the mantel of favorite.  This is why we hold competitions:  the teams need to go out and perform to their potential.  With two additional weeks to rest up and improve, and the pressure of a filled arena, just about anything could happen in this tough session.
