Pan Am Games: US Women Win Gold

The US team, led NU frosh Jessie DeZiel, won the gold medal at the Pan Am Games.  DeZiel led the US squad on all three events she competed.  Florida commit Bridgette Caquatto led the squad on UB and was the top AAer in fourth.  UGA commit Brandie Jay was 5th AA, while UF commit Bridget Sloan competed on UB and FX only.  Canada, using much of the World Championship squad, came in second, paced by UCLA signee Christine "Peng Peng" Lee.  The lead AA qualifier was Guatemala's new young standout Ana Sofia Gomez Porras, followed by Lee and then Stanford's Kristina Vaculik (of Canada). 

Jay also qualified to the VT finals, and Caquatto to the UB finals, while DeZiel qualified on FX (no 2nd vault).

2013-2014: Capps to OU

Chayse Capps has committed to OU, according to a site submission.  She's a L10 at Inifinite Bounds and also trains as a dancer.  At the 2011 L10 JO Nationals, she placed 8th(t) on BB and 30th in the AA.  She was 14th AA at the Region III L10 Regionals in 2010.

2013-2014: Ryder to Arkansas

Paris Ryder has committed to Arkansas for 2013-2014, according to a site submission and the NY USAG state web page.  Ryder trains as a L10 at GMGC in New York.  At the 2011 L10 JO Nationals, she placed 43rd AA.  She also placed 11th AA at the 2010 Region VI L10 Regionals.

Yales Hires Vonk as Assistant

Yale has hire Jason Vonk as an assistant, according to a school release.  He's spent the last six years as program director and owner of Stars National Gymnastics Village in Colorado.

World Championships: Event Finals Day 2

Florida commit Aly Raisman won the bronze on the FX as the world championships concluded.  She also placed 4th on the BB, while teammate Jordyn Wieber won the bronze on BB.  For the US men, Danell Leyva won the gold medal on the PB.

The other men's event champions included Yang Hak Seon of Korea on the Men's vault and China's Zou Kai on the HB.  For the women, China's Sui Lu won the BB and Russia's Ksenia Afanaseva won the FX.

World Championships: Event Finals, Day 1

McKayla Maroney of the US won the world title on the vault as the first day of event finals.  Former OU Sooner Steven Legendre finished 5th on FX while current Sooner Jake Dalton was 8th.  On Rings, former OU star Jonathan Horton was 7th. 

The other event champions included Russia's Viktoria Komova on UB, Japan's Kohei Uchimura on FX, Hungary's Krisztian Berki on PH, and China's Chen Yibing on Rings.  The finals conclude tomorrow.

2012-2013: Price to OU

Hunter Price of Aerial Athletics has committed to OU, according to a site submission.  The L9 is primarily a VT and FX specialist.  She was the 2010 and 2011 Region III L9 Vault Champion, scoring a 9.975 to win the title this past season.

World Championships: Women's AA Final

Jordyn Wieber won her first World Championship AA title, adding to her team gold from earlier this week despite problems on UB and a step out on FX.  Russia's Viktoria Komova finished just 0.033 behind.  Florida commit Aly Raisman was 4th after a major break on UB.  UCLA signee Christine "Peng Peng" Lee was 19th while DU grad Jessica Lopez placed 24th.

World Championships: Men's Team Final

China won yet another Men's World Championships, winning by roughly two points over Japan after the later suffered two falls on their final event, HB.  The US team, featuring four current or former OU Sooners, placed 3rd, just .01 points behind 2nd place Japan, with three hit sets on HB.  Earlier in the competition, the US counted a fall on VT from Jonathan Horton and a shakey routine on Rings from John Orozco.  They finished just 5th on those two events, after winning FX as a team and placing 2nd on the remaining events.

2012-2013: Bastuba to Air Force

Megan Bastuba has committed to the Air Force Academy for 2012-2013, according to a site submission.  She's a L10 at Olympia Gymnastics.  At the 2011 Region V L10 Regionals, she placed 12th AA.  In 2010, as a Level 9, she placed 4th AA and 3rd on FX at the Level 9 Eastern Nationals.
